Nigerian artistes are a force to reckon with in the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA 2018). The nomination list which has been made public has Davido, Wizkid, Olamide, Wande Coal, Kizz Daniel, Simi, Tiwa Savage, TuFace, Falz and other artistes battle with Diamond Platnumz, Nasty C, Shekhinah for awards in different categories. Shekhinah and Congo’s Maître Gims have the highest nominations this year. Simi represents Nigeria with five nominations. Organisers of the event also announced that four categories have been added: A frican DJ of the Year; Best African Dance/Choreography; African Lyricist/Rapper of the Year and Best African Act in Diaspora. Arsenal star, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang needs a pair of ‘scoring boots’ urgently having fired blanks in the first three games of the season. David Adeleke, aka Davido kicks off his NYSC serving scheme. With platoon number LA/18B/6389, he registered for 2018 Batch ‘B’ Stream 2 Orientation Course at the Lagos NYSC Camp, Iyana Ipaja, Agege. It is almost certain the super star singer will not stay for the three-week camping exercise as he has a show in the US on the 31st of August. Davido showed up in irregular NYSC uniform and was still feted and fawned upon by NYSC staff. Sarkodie Rapper Sarkodie has become the unlikely victim of public outrage against Nigerian music by some Ghanaians. A post on Instagram promoting a new song by Mr P, a member of the defunct P-Square, has triggered a flurry of insults by some angry Ghanaians. Their anger stems from the cold reception Nigerian fans gave to Ghanaian artistes who performed at a concert to launch Zylofon Media and Menzgold in Nigeria. The concert at the Eko Hotels witnessed performances from 2Baba (2Face), M.I, Patoranking, Tekno, Ice Prince, YCee, among others. Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Becca, King Promise, Kumi Guitar, Obibini and Joyce Blessing represented Ghana at the event. While the Nigerian artistes received loud cheers and support from the Nigerian patrons at the event, the same could not be said about the Ghanaian contingent. Nigerian Afropop star, Ayo Balogun popularly known as Wizkid, says he is working on a “little project” with a “very big” American producer . The Nigerian singer, who is working towards the release of his fourth studio album, said the producer is based in Atlanta but failed to mention the person’s name. Wizkid described the project as “something I’m very excited about”. He made the disclosure to Vogue while unveiling his new capsule collection in Manhattan, New York, US. The collection includes a Starboy-branded bomber jacket, bandanas, ‘Made in Lagos’ and ‘Ojuelegba’ branded tee-shirts. Read his statement below; “I have remained quiet while my name has been dragged in the mud the past few years. Some of Nigeria’s biggest artists have infringed on my copyrights but I always restricted myself to speaking out against this in the media. Maybe because I always felt that music is an art and not really a business where you bring in lawyers and all that.That’s why I couldn’t believe when I was sued for N50m by the same people who stole my intellectual property. I have nothing personal against Wizkid & BankyW, in fact I can say I groove to both their music, but the fact is that they stole my song in 2011 and there’s clear evidence to prove it. Blackface has sued Wizkid and Banky W over alleged intellectual property theft. Blackface and Loudhouz Entertainment Limited are listed as plaintiffs in the suit while Empire Mates Entertainment, Starboy Entertainment, Wizkid and Banky W are the defendants. Filed Tuesday, August 14, Blackface is seeking a declaration that ‘Slow Whine’, a song on Wizkid’s debut ‘Superstar’ album, released in 2011, is a reproduction of ‘Like The Way’, a record he put out in April 2010. He claims that the vocal rhythm, melodic progression and lyrical content of principal parts were lifted from his song. Blackface is seeking a perpetual injunction restraining Wizkid and Banky W from performing ‘Slow Whine’ for any commercial purpose. Blackface also requested that the court awards him N40 million as damages for “musical plagiarism” and infringement of his recording.
